Mt Rushmore

Oct 1 Day 24 we drove by Crazy Horse National Monument when we arrived to Custer, South Dakota area. This depiction of the famed Sioux leader has been called a 'Native American rebuttal' to presidential Mt. Rushmore. Difficult to appreciate the sheer size of the sculpture from the road. It is the world's largest monument but it may not be finished for hundreds of years as federal funding has been turned down.

Sunset at our campsite.

At our site where gail force winds threatened to tear our tent from its ground stakes. Would have later had we not been inside. Why am I not in the photo? Am I taking the photo? No. Good guess though. Unlike the tent, I was not staked down to the bench. Now I know how Dorothy felt that afternoon in Kansas!!! Come back to see this photo - deleted it accidentally. I am in sooooooooo much trouble. I fixed it...

Oct 2 Day 25. Baby Dax born in Santa Barbara!! Way to go Vicki and Casey!!!!

Mt. Rushmore. The faces of "The Boys", as I called them, are 60 feet from neck to crown carved in granite cliffs. This was sculptor Gutzon Borglum's life work from 1927-1930. George, Tom, Teddy, Abe. The detail is awesome. The workers were so skilled that they could achieve the desired shape within 4 inches of the mark using dynamite. Even TR's eyeglasses are depicted!!
The Presidential Walk, a .5 mile path around the base of the monument, helped make the enormity of this site more real. A different look at George W. (Please come back to view this photo too- it's a beauty. SHHHHH! I accidentally deleted it & haven't told Tomie yet! SHHHH!) OK I Fixed it.. I forgive her.

From faces to asses. We spied these beauties on Iron Mountain Drive as we approached Custer State Park.

Next, a definite first for me. Our marathon drive took us through sunset and then sunrise the next morning on our trek to Illinois to see more of Tomie's family. Stay tuned...
