Another Birthday Celebration

Oct 3 Day 26. So, we drove all night - remember, sunset and sunrise during the same drive. At Tomie's Mom's house in Plainfield, IL, I napped for 32 minutes while Tomie arranged for her travel visas. A 60+ minute run along the Illinois & Michigan canal woke us up. We then went out with family for a deliciously enjoyable birthday dinner - Mom's treat!Tomie's niece Adrienne helped her blow out Tomie's birthday candle. (note: cheesecake is one of Tomie's favs.)Happy faces upon realizing we were going to get some sleep soon!! Bad news - Cubs lose game one to the D-backs.
P.S. Tomie never made it to bed. She fell asleep on the couch.

Oct 4 Day 27 - Tomie finalizes and purchases her around the world ticket!!! We say farewell to Tomie's Mom and venture into the Windy City. Lots of people. Lots more people than we are accustomed to seeing. Tomie and I actually split up and did our own thing. Yes, we are okay. Tomie took this shot of the Sears Tower while on an architectural boat tour. The Sears Tower has the highest roof, the highest occupied floor, and highest antennae. Malaysia's Petronas Towers, however, are officially taller due to their decorative spires.
After eating delicious deep dish pizza, we wandered over to Grant Park. Here, Tomie simulates quenching her thirst courtesy of Buckingham Fountain. Stupid Human Tricks!! Did you know - the 4 pairs of 20 foot bronze sea horses symbolize the 4 states bordering Lake Michigan - WI, IL, IN, MI.

Millenium Park was dedicated July 14, 2004. You have to check this out if you have not been here yet!!! This is Crown Fountain which displays a constantly changing exhibition of lights and electronic images. There is a spout at the site where the images' mouths are projected. We didn't get to see any spouting on this trip. Having been here a year ago, I can tell you that the whole fountain is even more impressive at night. The faces of 1,000 Chicagoans were recorded for this art piece and are displayed in turn on the 2 towers' LED screens. COOL!!! A shallow black granite reflecting pool separates the two 50 foot high towers. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is the name of the stainless steel outdoor concert venue designed by Frank Gehry (also designed Disney Hall in Los Angeles). The vast steel trellis forms an acoustical canopy as it extends over the Great Lawn.
Cloud Gate (I call it 'the bean') is made of 168 plates of 1/4 in. thick stainless steel and weighs over 110 tons. The artists' inspiration was liquid mercury. The distorted mirrored images are good times!! Tomie and I are in this shot. We're not sure if the distortion is from 'the bean' or the deepdish pizza!!!!

After our spontaneous and thoroughly enjoyable trip into the city, we embarked on our drive East through Indiana and into Michigan, headed for the Detroit area to visit Tomie's friend Eric. More bad news - despite Tomie buying a Cubs hat while in Chicago, the Cubs lose game two to Arizona. Thus, I am on blog duty, Tomie is getting her rally cap ready.
